R. Dillard Teer was born the second son of Nello and Gertrude Teer in Durham in 1920. Dillard attended the University of Virginia and joined the Nello L. Teer Company in 1940, where he worked in various capacities until becoming Vice President and Secretary-Treasurer in 1952. One of Dillard’s main responsibilities for the firm was the procurement and maintenance of over four thousand pieces of equipment. This included the logistical transfer of equipment from project to project. After the company’s acquisition of Durham and Southern Railway in 1952, Dillard became Executive Vice President of the railroad until it was sold in 1976. His position as Assistant Superintendent for the Raleigh-Durham Airfield project led him to service on the Airport Authority from 1949 to 1980. Seven of those years he was chairman. Throughout his life, Dillard has been a faithful local and state public servant, holding leadership roles in numerous civic organizations. He has served on the boards of the Durham Chamber of Commerce, the Durham County General Hospital, and the Methodist Retirement Home. He held executive positions in the YMCA, the International Kiwanis group, the Durham Child Guidance Clinic, and the Durham Chamber of Commerce. Dillard also served a four year term as a Durham County Commissioner. He has been married to Mildred Roycroft since 1942, and they have five children. Dillard retired as Senior Vice President in January of 1980. He remains active in civic organizations in the community.
